Eagles Six Pack for The Pro-Bowl.

First of all, congratulations to the six Eagle players selected to play in this years pro-bowl: Kicker-David Akers, Defensive End-Trent Cole, Fullback-Leonard Weaver, Wide Receiver/Kick Returner-Desean Jackson, Corner Back-Asante Samuel & Offensive Tackle-Jason Peters. The six-man contingent represents the most the team has sent to a Pro Bowl since 2004, when 10 Eagles earned trips to the pro-bowl.

Based on their respective performances this season, each of the aforementioned players are deserving of their selection and we’ll break down their efforts in just a moment, but first, I would like to talk about who didn’t get the nod. Corner Back Sheldon Brown given the cold shoulder once again which is a shame, because he certainly would have received my vote this year. 22 pass deflections, five interceptions-one returned for a touchdown to go along with a fumble return for score. Sheldon Brown, a player with pro-bowl credentials but zero pro-bowl selections.

For those of you wondering about Donovan McNabb; the three NFC Quarterbacks selected this year were Drew Brees, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Meanwhile Tight End Brent Celek taking a back seat to San Francisco’s Vernon Davis and Dallas’ Jason Witten. Heck, even perennial Pro-Bowler Tony Gonzalez got the snuff.

As for the six Eagles who did get selected.

David Akers leads the NFL with 139 points and 32 field goals this season, while connecting on a career-high 88.9% of his attempts. He tied his own team record by nailing 17 field goals in a row, en route to earning NFC special team’s player of the month honors in November. He has also made two game-winning kicks in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter this season (11/29 vs. Washington and 12/27 vs. Denver). With four career Pro Bowl selections, Akers is now tied for the 3rd in NFL history for Pro Bowl berths among kickers. Only Morten Andersen (7) and Jan Stenerud (6) have registered more.

Trent Cole earned his second Pro Bowl nomination. He is the first Eagles defensive end drafted in the 5th-round-or-later to garner multiple Pro Bowl honors since Clyde Simmons (9th round selection in 1986), who earned two Pro Bowl berths in, Philadelphia. Cole has registered a career-high 12.5 sacks this season, which ranks fifth in the NFL and third in the NFC. He leads the Eagles in sacks and hurries (26), and ranks second in total tackles (90). With 47 career sacks, Cole ranks 5th in franchise history and has registered the highest sack total ever for an Eagles draft pick in his first five seasons.

DeSean Jackson, one of the leagues most dynamic players sparkled as both a wide receiver and punt returner in just his 2nd NFL season. The 23-year old Jackson leads the NFL in yards per catch (18.7) and punt return average (16.0) and tied an NFL record by chalking up eight touchdowns of 50+ yards in a season, tying Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch (1951) and Devin Hester (2007). In fact, Jackson’s average touchdown has covered 52.8 yards, the highest ever in league annals among players with 10-or-more scores. A second round draft pick of the Eagles in 2008, Jackson became the second Eagles wide receiver to earn a Pro Bowl berth in the Andy Reid era, joining Terrell Owens in 2005*. The last Eagle draft pick to make the Pro Bowl as a wide receiver was Fred Barnett in 1993*. Jackson is also the first player in team history to be voted in as a return specialist. As a matter of fact, according to the NFL, Jackson is believed to be the first player in league history to be selected at both wide receiver and kick returner in the same season.

Jason Peters, regarded as one of the league’s finest offensive tackles earned his third consecutive Pro Bowl berth and his first as an Eagle. He was acquired in a blockbuster trade by the Eagles from the Buffalo Bills this past offseason. Peters has helped pave the way for the league’s 3rd highest scoring offense (28.6 points per game), and 10th ranked offense in terms of total yards (366.5 yards per game).

Asante Samuel earned his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection, the longest current streak among NFL cornerbacks. He became the first Eagles cornerback to post consecutive Pro Bowl berths since Troy Vincent earned five straight from 2000-04. Samuel leads the NFL with 9 interceptions (tied with safeties Darren Sharper and Jairus Byrd) in 2009 to go along with 42 tackles, nine passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He has a pair of two-interception performances this year (vs. Washington on 11/29/09 and vs. Tampa Bay on 10/11/09) and six during his career. No player in the NFL has more interceptions than Samuel’s 29 since the start of the 2006 season. Samuel was signed by the Eagles on the first day of the free agent signing period in 2008 after spending his first five NFL seasons with the New England Patriots.

Leonard Weaver became the first Eagles fullback to garner Pro Bowl honors since Bill Barnes did so three times from 1958-60. He joined the Eagles as a free agent signing this past offseason and has gone on to register career highs and lead all NFL fullbacks in rushing attempts (69) and rushing yards (321). He also has a career high in rushing touchdowns (2), while adding 15 receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Originally signed as a rookie free agent by Seattle in 2005, Weaver is the only Carson-Newman College product ever to earn Pro Bowl honors.

The AFC-NFC Pro Bowl game will be played on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida, one week prior to Super Bowl 44. Needless to say these six players are hoping their trip to Miami will be for one game and one game only, and it’s not the Pro-Bowl.

Eagles Fans Being Taken for Another Ride

If you've ever ridden a roller coaster, then you can somewhat understand what it feels like to be an Eagles fan and trust me, this years team has taken it's fans on yet another ride.

It all started in the off season, when the front office decided to not overpay for 13 year veteran safety Brian Dawkins; not just the heart and soul of the team’s defense but also a huge fan favorite. Needless to say, this move did not sit well with the fan base, many of whom pledged to not renew their season tickets. More on that in just a moment.

Now imagine someone cutting the electricity on your roller coaster ride leaving you stuck upside down in the middle of the loop. It’s kind of how many Eagles fan felt the night of the August 13, when the announcement was made in the middle of the pre-season opener against New England, that the team had just signed former Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to a two year contract.

Gee, I’m going to guess there are at least one or two Eagle fans who are dog lovers. As it turned out, team owner Jeff Lurie had put his two dogs to sleep over the past two years and was extremely sickened by the brutal acts of abuse Vick and his partners performed on Vicks stable of fighting pit bulls. So why sign the former felon? Again, the team lets all around good guy Brian Dawkins walk but in turn signs a player who at the height of his federal trial, was public enemy number one. Talk about a publicity nightmare. Then came more pledges of fans not only willing to forgo next years season tickets but also wanting to boycott the team this season. Again, more on that in just a moment.

Then there was the 1-and-3 preseason record which quickly prompted regular season predictions of the team finishing 6-10, 7-9 or 8-8. The fact the eagles gave up 120 points in those four exhibition games, only added to the rage of those fans already upset over the loss of Dawkins.

Hold on to the bar and please keep your arms inside the confines of the coaster car because we are about to hit an incline. The Birds win their season opener by crushing Carolina in Charlotte 38-10 as the defense converted 7 Panther turnovers into 24 points. Unfortunately, in the win Donovan McNabb suffered a pair of broken ribs. So, here we go again, another injury for number 5 and another season of uncertainty.

During Donovan’s two game absence, third year quarterback Kevin Kolb stepped in and threw for over 700 yards, 4 touchdowns & 3 Interceptions. Unfortunately some of those numbers coming in 48-22 loss to the previously unbeaten New Orleans Saints.

The season appeared headed for certain derailment on October 18th, when the 2-2 Birds jetted west for a show down with the 1-3 Oakland Raiders, a game that should have produced Philadelphia’s third win of the season. Instead a 13-9 loss to the silver and black had Eagle fans screaming for Donovan McNabb’s benching and the ouster of Andy Reid as head coach. Oh yeah and more fans wanting to opt out of their season tickets, more on that in just a, well you know.

Now, when it comes to fall in Philadelphia there are two things most Eagles fans can count on, plenty of leaves to rake and a late season run by their beloved birds. As a matter of fact during Andy Reid’s 11 year tenure as head coach, his teams are 73-39-1 in games played from November on, including an impressive 31-11 mark in the month of December. This season the Eagles went 7-2 through November and December, 8-2 if you count the Redskins win on the last weekend in October.

Bottom line, the Birds are now in sole possession of first place atop the NFC East with a record of 11-4. A win this Sunday in Dallas would give them the outright division title, the second seed overall in the Conference playoffs, a first round playoff bye and a chance to advance to the teams 6th Conference title game in 8 years. Yep, it’s been another typical football season in Philadelphia.

By the way, for all those Eagles fans who still want to vacate their season tickets, listen up. According to team president Joe Banner, the waiting list for season tickets is currently 60,000 names long. Recently 15 of those fans were given the chance to purchase tickets. At that rate, it would take 4,000 years for all 60,000 of those fans to get tickets.

Once again the Philadelphia Union Front office reaching out to its fan base today, this time with a little holiday cheer. Impressive for a team that won't play its first game until next year.

Impressive because the team has always kept its fans in the loop with just about every step it takes. From the Announcement that the team was coming to Philadelphia, to the groundbreaking for the new stadium, to the team naming ceremony and even a recent meet the player’s party. The Fans have always been included, and for that we thank the Union.

No, I do not have a mouse in my pocket, but when I say we, I speak on behalf of all those S-O-B's out there who can't wait for the team to play its first game. Of course if you didn’t know by now, S-O-B is a synonym for the teams fan support group, Son’s of Ben, or as the team affectionately calls us, the Founding members.

On behalf of the entire Philadelphia Union organization, I’d like to wish you a very happy and healthy holiday season!

What a year 2009 has been. We began the year without an identity, technical staff, players and many of you who are now part of our extended Philadelphia Union family. If you think 2009 was exciting though, just wait until 2010. The culmination of years of hard work will finally bring us to our inaugural season in just a few short months, including First Kick on March 25th against Seattle, our Home Opener on April 10th against D.C. and our stadium opening along the banks of the Delaware River in Chester, PA.

With the first step of the expansion draft completed, the final pieces will quickly come together between now and First Kick. The January transfer window should bring quite a bit of excitement and the MLS SuperDraft on January 14th will be a great opportunity for everyone to come together to welcome our new draftees. Before we know it, we’ll be into our first season standing behind our Team Manager Peter Nowak and his squad as they take the field.

Union Solidifying It's Foundation

The MLS Expansion Philadelphia Union continues to lay the ground work for a long term commitment to the soccer rich communities here in South Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern Jersey and Delaware.

With a solid fan base already in place and a soccer specific 18,500 seat stadium nearing completion, the team this week announced it’s partnership with Reading United AC (formerly Reading Rage) as their exclusive minor league affiliate in this area.

“As the Major League Soccer club in the region, we have a responsibility to help grow the game and teach our young supporters the proper way the game is played,” said Philadelphia Union Team Manager Peter Nowak. “Our Technical Staff will work closely with the coaches at YSC and Reading United AC to ensure everyone in the program has the best insights to the game we can provide.”

“As we enter our 15th year of minor league soccer here in Reading, we’re taking our game and our serious commitment to soccer in the region to another level,” reflected Reading United AC General Manager Art Auchenbach. “We are excited about our affiliation with Philadelphia Union on a multitude of levels. Of course, fielding a first rate club on the field remains our top priority. Our mission is to help train young players, while setting the standard for a local, club neutral program. And that is consistent with what Philadelphia Union is already doing.”

Collectively, this means a new era of growth and development for soccer throughout the area. One goal will be to groom young talent in Reading to prepare them to advance to Philadelphia Union and MLS.

“We are pleased things came together so seamlessly, with the leadership of Reading United AC,” said Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “Our goals and aspirations, from the grass roots on up through our first team are very complementary. There’s a commonality of purpose, to do things right, on the pitch and off. We look forward to a long and successful partnership to help grow the game at all levels here in Berks County.”

Matt Szczur: Champion For Life

Hey Matt Szczur, you and your Villanova teammates just beat the Montana Grizzlies 23-21 to win the Football Championship Sub Division National Title, what are you going to do next? This much we do know, he’s certainly not going to Disney World.

You see, young Matt has a more pressing engagement. Back in November he found out he was a perfect match as a bone marrow donor for a one-year-old little girl with leukemia. Matt, able to offer this gift of life opportunity, after participating in the football programs annual bone marrow drive. Szczur will actually donate his marrow next month.

In many ways I am very envious of Matt. For one, it was his Wildcats winning the National Championship and not my Wildcats, the University of New Hampshire.

Granted UNH did hand Nova its only blemish in a 14-1 season, but it was a loss Nova avenged in the second round of the playoffs. Secondly, I too went through the same bone marrow testing program Matt did at Villanova, and recently got a call telling me I was one of two matches for a 55-year-old woman who had leukemia. In the end my marrow was not needed. Matt, however has a chance to really make a difference. Good luck Matt.

Meanwhile, a big congratulation to one of my favorite people, Villanova head football coach Andy Talley. Andy took over the reigns of the schools football program 25 years ago following a five year period in which Villanova didn’t even have football.

During his two and a half decade tenure on the Main Line, Talley has guided Villanova to eight NCAA playoff appearances, five conference championships, two Lambert Meadowland Cups, two ECAC Team of the Year awards, two national semifinal appearances and now the schools first ever National Title in football. Take that Howie Long (Nova Alum).

Andy has also coached and produced some pretty good players, like Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Brian Finneran who won the schools first ever Walter Payton Award in 1997 (sub divisions version of the Heisman).

To date, Finneran is the only wide receiver to ever claim this honor. In 2001, current Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook won the Payton Award, making Villanova one of just five schools to produce two Payton Award winners.

Once again, kudos to Andy, Matt and the entire Villanova football program, not a bad little gift to take home for the holidays.

Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation

The 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Hockey Classic between the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins at Fenway Park is just a few weeks away and yet for a group or aspiring inner city hockey players, those few weeks must feel like a lifetime.

Back in 2005, Flyers owner Ed Snider created the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation (ESYHF) as a personal commitment to teach children important life lessons. The Foundation uses the sport of ice hockey as its “hook” to bring a diverse population of children together, enabling them to enjoy a top-notch sports experience coupled with an array of educational activities and character development. The program has rapidly grown to include over 2,500 participants in just its fourth full season.

The mission of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation is to use the sport of hockey to help young people succeed in the game of life. The program incorporates on-ice and off-ice activities, stressing citizenship, academics, and life skills. ESYHF services are targeted for boys and girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn to skate or to play ice hockey. The Foundation provides equipment, ice time, and experienced coaching at no cost. The Foundation partners with the Philadelphia Department of Recreation and the School District of Philadelphia to bring its programs to 10 sites throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region to children from over 100 public schools.

On January first, members of the ESYHF will skate on a specially constructed “frozen pond” at Fenway and play hockey throughout the NBC national broadcast, as well as participate in official pre-game ceremonies on the actual ice surface. Pretty Cool Stuff, especially when you consider that this fun-filled three-day adventure will be the first-ever trip out of the city for many of these young people, most of whom come from underserved, inner-city neighborhoods.

Wait there’s more. This week Flyers players Jeff Carter and team captain Mike Richards personally donated Bauer hockey equipment to members of the ESYHF. Dude, these kids get to where the same skates once worn by an NHL player. Can you say Cinderella? This whole story gives me goose bumps, or maybe it’s just the cold basement I’m sitting in.

Mr. Snider, as long as I have known you and covered your teams, you have always been a class act, and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation just proves my point. Kudos to you.

Booing Santa Is Way Overrated.

Yes, they booed Santa and have not been able to live it down ever since. Come on, I'm sure at some point or another while watching the Eagles play your team, you have heard the announcers smugly tell you, "Hey Eagle’s fans are tough, they even booed Santa Claus once." Yes, once, a very long time ago. Oh and by the way, they also threw snow balls at him too.

First of all, you need to know the real story behind this urban legend if you will. Its roots stem form a December 15, 1968 Eagles-Vikings game at Franklin Field. That particular year the Eagles were horrible, finished 2-12 following an 0-11 start. Like I said, they were horrible. Needless to say, Philadelphia fans were neither amused nor excited by the team’s efforts, which only added to their frustration that day.

The Santa in question was a skinny 20 year old kid named Frank Olivo who had been wearing a Santa suit and fake white beard to the final Eagles home game of the year for several seasons. As halftime of the Vikings game approached that day, the Eagles' entertainment director asked Frank, to replace a hired Santa who had been stranded by the snowstorm.

As Olivo ran downfield past a row of elf-costumed Eagle cheerleaders, the team’s brass band began playing "Here Comes Santa Claus," and It was then, that the boos began raining down on Saint Nick or in this case Saint Frank. Those boos were then followed by the snow balls. For Olivo, it was just an unfortunate case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Eagles fans were not really mad at Claus, they were mad the teams ill timed attempt to spread a little good cheer during another wise blah season. So remember this story next time you hear an announcer tell you that Eagles fans booed Santa Claus.

Now, with that said, you should know that this Sunday prior to the Eagles-49ers game, Eagles fan Michael Young and a few hundred of his friends will hold a charity tailgate toy collection and Fundraiser for the police athletic league. Former Eagle players Willy T, Fred Barnett and Brian Mitchell will be on hand to sign autographs along with the folks from Butz and Butz Sports Radio.

Any fan that brings an unwrapped new toy will get an autographed picture. A $20 donation will also get you an autographed photo. $75 gets you a signed ball by all 3 former players, and for a $15 donation, all the food and drink you want. The Police Athletic League will be there by the way to collect the toys. Hey, if you are in the holiday spirit and want to take a pause for the cause, you can find Michael and his posse in lot D-6 at the Wachovia Center across from Lincoln Financial Field-see map.

So see, Eagle fans aren’t really as bad as the reputation that precedes them. Just don’t wear your favorite team’s jersey to a Philly home game unless it’s got a little kelly or midnight green in it.

Hey Sometimes We All Just Need A Good Laugh.

“Don’t worry,” he wrote, “I know it feels like the end of the world, but you will land on your feet again.” At the time those words of encouragement meant the world to me, because at the time, I really did feel like my world was ending.

It was my former Channel 6 colleague Dave Roberts who took the time to write those words and send that card four years ago. The card coming just a few short weeks after receiving word that my services were no longer required at the station and that my contract would not be renewed. The gesture would have been no surprise to anyone who knows Dave, because it’s who he is. A kind, sensitive and caring person who genuinely never has a bad thing to say about anyone. Come to think of it, I can’t remember a time during my 15 years at channel 6 when I ever saw Dave not smile.

I’m sure by now most of you know that Dave is also the father of actor Dave Boreanaz of Buffy and the Vampire and Bones Fame, but Dave also has two other children and three grand children. I mention this, because once or twice a week I would wonder into the Action News Weather department to ask if the weather would be good enough on my days off to play golf and I remember how he always had numerous photos of his family on display.

In addition to his demeanor and personality, the thing that also amazed me, was how youthful he always looked, even as he said good-bye to his TV family this week, the 73 year old Roberts still looked years younger than his birth certificate. I often wondered if Dave was tapped into the same fountain of youth as “America’s Oldest Living Teenager “ Dick Clark, who was born 7 years before Dave.

Spreading the love came easy for Dave, after-all he was born on Valentines day. In addition to his on air work, he was well-regarded for his community service. Active with numerous charities in the Delaware Valley, he received the "Man of the Year Achievement Award" from the Central Delco Lodge #2438, Order of the Sons of Italy in America, and was also selected as "Person of the Year" by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

I think it safe to safe to say that Dave’s toughest challenge during his 31 year tenure at 4100 City Avenue, was playing straight man for both Jim Gardner and the late Gary Papa. You just never knew what those three were going to throw your way every night, or should I say, Dave never knew what Jim and Gary were going to throw at him. Whatever the scenario, Dave handled it like the true professional he was. Even during the celebration of life ceremony for Papa, Roberts was able to take the emotion of the moment and put a smile on our face. Like Gary, Dave too will be missed and I can only imaging how tough it is for Jim Gardner, now that he is without two of his closest friends.

Good luck Dave, not only in retirement but also with that Honey do list I’m sure your wife Patti has waiting for you.

Note: Prior to his arrival at Action News in 1978, television viewers in Buffalo knew him as Dave Thomas (Thomas is Roberts' real middle name.) He was a weatherman at Buffalo’s WKBW-TV and host of its "Rocketship 7" show, a Children's program. When Dave came to Philadelphia, he changed his name to Dave Roberts to avoid confusion with viewers since WPVI-TV already had Lisa Thomas Laury.

Army Looking to Sink Navy and Earn Bowl Berth Verses Temple.

"The first day at Annapolis you get your head shaved and get an orientation by the superintendent and at the end you say 'Beat Army,' so right away you know that this is a big deal." - Roger Staubach, Navy.

That pretty much says it all and don't think for one second the same message isn't mentioned to every incoming cadet at West Point, “Go Army, Beat Navy.”

As I sit here at my computer, the 110th meeting between the two services academies is just half an hour away. The two teams meeting in Philadelphia for the 82nd time in the storied rivalry. The action on the field is no different from any other college football game, but the pageantry surrounding the event is second to none. From the march of cadets to the fly over to the presentation of the Commander in Chiefs Trophy, it's a smorgasbord for the senses.

The first ever game in this series was played in 1890 at West Point with the mid shipmen blanking the Black Knights 24-0. As a matter of fact heading into today’s game, Navy holds a 53-49-7 edge in the series and currently riding a six game win streak. At 5-6, Army needs a win to become bowl eligible. A win would mean a December 29th trip to the Eagle Bank Bowl, December 29th against Temple University, who ironically play their home games at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. If the Black Knights fail in their bid to beat Navy, Temple will play UCLA in the Eagle Bank Bowl. The outcome of today’s game has no bearing on 8-4 Navy’s bowl plans, win or lose they have a New Years Eve day rendezvous with Missouri in the Texas Bowl.

The Chance of a Lifetime

Recently the Philadelphia Union held the second of two open tryout camps perhaps hoping to find that diamond in the rough, that one talented player that may have somehow evaded the eyes of scouts sent world wide in search of such talent.

According to the teams Vice President of Communications, Carl Cherkin about 1,000 MLS wannabes registered for the two day event at the University of Pennsylvania. Some came from as far away as Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, some simply from South Jersey & South Philadelphia. Their chances of claiming one of the remaining Union roster spots slim to none, but still they challenged themselves and 30 degree temperatures, in an effort to follow their dreams.

“It could change my life”, said 19 year Mike Beeson of Maryland. John Longfellow of Florida added, “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy”. Maybe, just maybe, Mike and John will be among the select few players invited back for round two of the tryout process January 24th. Any players invited to join the Philadelphia Union at their training camp will be announced at the conclusion of the round two tryouts at the end of that day.

The Union will also look to bolster their roster through the MLS Super draft Jan 14, at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention here in Philadelphia. The Union is slotted to select the number one over-all pick, followed by the 17th, 33rd and 49th picks. The team will then hold its first ever training camp starting Feb.1, with first kick scheduled for March 25 at Qwest Field against Seattle Sounders FC. The inaugural home opener is scheduled for April 10 against D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field.

Reid Gets three year extension

It had been a topic of conversation since the season started but today rumor became reality as the Philadelphia Eagles signed head coach & executive vice president of football operations Andy Reid to a three year contract extension, a deal that will keep Reid in Philadelphia through 2013.

The news brought mixed reaction among the Philadelphia fan base as evidence by some of the responses left on my face book page. For example, one fan called the signing “A Joke”. Another made light of the situation asking, “Is that long enough to see his kids get paroled”, Ouch! Then there was Mike who tendered the question, “Aren't you tired of the same old blather week after week (I have to get my team in a better position to win, gotta get it fixed, hmm, hmm), not to mention his inability to challenge plays, clock management, run/pass balance, etc. My biggest problem with him is that he doesn't respect the fans. "

Ironically these comments come with the team poised to win another NFC East title, their 6th during Reid’s 11 year tenure. Oh and did I mention the 8-4 Eagles have won three consecutive games and are currently tied for the third best record in the Conference behind the 12-0 Saints and 10-2 Vikings. That can’t be a bad thing can it? I guarantee football fans in Cleveland and Detroit would switch places in a heat beat.

Look, I have lived in Philadelphia for almost 20 years and the best word I can use to describe the sports fans in this town, Passionate. They live, eat and breathe sports. Fortunately their hunger for a championship parade was temporarily satiated in 2008 with the Phillies World Series win; however, I can’t help but think a Super Bowl title would mean just a little bit more. Perhaps it’s the fact that the Eagles are the only team in their division not to win the Super Bowl-Cowboys 5 times, Giants and Redskins 3 each. Let’s face it, that’s frustrating.

For those fans unhappy with the Reid extension, let me throw a couple of names at you. Ray Rhodes, Rich Kotite, Buddy Ryan. During the 13 year period prior to Reid, those three coaches combined for a regular season record of 98-98-2 and a playoff mark of 2-6. 

Since being named head coach on January 11, 1999, Reid has compiled the best win total (115), winning percentage (.611) and playoffs victory total (10) in team history. He has captured five division titles and five trips to the NFC Championship game, while earning playoff berths in seven of his first 10 seasons. In that time span, no team has earned more divisional round playoff appearances (7) or championship game appearances (5) than Reid’s Eagles.

Reid is one of just four active coaches (Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, and Fisher) with 100 regular season victories. In addition, his winning percentage ranks 14th in NFL history among all coaches with at least 100 games under their belt, while his 115 overall wins rank 31st in NFL history,

Word of advice for those Eagles fans who want to run Reid out of town. Be Careful what you wish for. Andy’s replacement could be the next John McKay who guided the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an 0-26 start.

Can The U.S. Repeat the "Miracle On Grass" ?

Thirty two teams, thirty two 32 Countries, all vying for the right to become King of the Football World. Oh Sure, the usual suspects will be heavily favored, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Spain Germany, you know the drill. Then of course there will be the one or two teams that pull off some first round upsets, Ghana, Mexico, and Greece. Yawn, yawn, yawn, enough already. Let's get to what might be the best opening round match-up of the tournament. The good old United States against the country that actually invented the Beautiful game, England. Its true look it up.

Of course it's not the first time the U.S. and England have done battle on African soil, after-all, the Americans did help the Brits out of a bit of a sticky wicket back in World War Two, when General Patton teamed up with General Montgomery to Drive Rommel and his Afrika Korps out of Northern Africa and back to Germany.

Then of course there was that little tiff between the England and America back in 1775, something about a revolutionary something or other. Ah but yes, I do Digress and apparently a bit too much. As far as their respective battles on the football pitch, well victory has been a bit more lopsided in England’s favor. I do believe the Three Lions hold a 7-2 advantage in the series, following a 2-0 friendly over Bob Bradley and company back in May. Question is, can the U.S. shock England in that first round game June 12th at Rustenberg? YES, yes they can.

Hey, all the U.S. has to do is draw a little inspiration from a guy named Joe Gaetjens. Come on, you know Joe don’t you? Really! Well Gaetjens scored the one and only goal for the United States in an opening round upset of England during the 1950 World Cup tournament in Brazil.

They called it the “Miracle on Grass”. Yes, I know that was 60 years ago, but sometimes you just have to hold on to something and again try draw on a little inspiration.

Of course England just one of three opponents the U.S. will face in the group stage. The Red White and Blue will also have to face Algeria and Slovenia. Despite whatever happens against England, the Americans will be favored against both of those teams and should tally enough points to advance to the next round for the first time since their quarterfinal run in 2002.

Hopkins A Heavy Weight ?

During a recent interview with the New York Post, Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins proclaimed, "I will become heavyweight champion in 2010.”  Lofty expectations for an aging middleweight who will celebrate his 45th birthday next month. Hey, we have doubted B-Hop in the past and he has proven us wrong, so never say never.

This much we do know, Hopkins has two fights scheduled in the next four months. The first taking place  8:00pm this Wednesday night (December 2nd) at Temple University's Liacouras Center. The opponent, 19 year old middleweight contender Enrique Ornelas (29-5, 19 KO’s).  It will be Hopkins first home town bout since his 2003 TKO of Morrade Hakkar.

This fight is also a tune up for a March 13th fight against Roy Jones Jr. That's right, Roy Jones Jr., a bout that will match two of the best pound for pound boxers to ever step into the squared circle. For the Executioner, it’s also a chance to avenge a May 22, 1993 loss, in which Jones claimed the vacant IBF Middleweight crown in a unanimous 12 round decision.

Union Bolster Back Stop

As a Son's of Ben Supporter and season ticket holder, I am more than impressed with the way the expansion Philadelphia Union have built their Franchise.  From the implementation of Nick Sakiewicz as CEO, Tom Veit as President and Peter Nowak as manager to the site selection for the stadium and the team colors and crest.  The Union has also done a decent job to date of player selection including the first ever trade in franchise history.

Just four days after drafting 10 players from in the 2009 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft, Philadelphia Union has added former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Chris Seitz to their roster in exchange for allocation money. Financial terms, as per club policy, are not disclosed.

“We are extremely excited about acquiring Chris Seitz who has been in the U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper pool and with Real Salt Lake the past three seasons,” said Philadelphia Union Team Manager Peter Nowak. “He’s physically imposing and now has a chance to compete to become a starting goalkeeper in MLS and realize his full potential.”

During his three years in Salt Lake, Seitz made seven starts-three in his rookie season and four during RSL’s 2009 MLS Cup Championship campaign-and recorded a 1.86 goals against average in 630 minutes in goal. Drafted fourth overall in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, Seitz was the second highest goalkeeper drafted in League history and became the second youngest goalkeeper to start an MLS match (20 years, 49 days of age) when he made his MLS debut on April 30, 2007. Only Tim Howard, current Everton (EPL) and #1 USMNT goalkeeper was younger by about six months.

“With the addition of Chris to our club, we’ve got two good young goalkeepers who will help build a strong foundation for our future,” offered CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “I’ve seen and heard a lot about Chris and Brad Knighton, who we drafted from New England, and I look forward to watching the competition between them once training begins.”

Philadelphia Union’s first ever First Kick will take place on the road, March 25, 2010 vs. Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field and nationally televised on ESPN2/ESPN Deportes. The club’s home opener is April 10 vs. regional rival D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field.

Sixers Have Questions, But Still No Answer.

I'm sure by now many of you have heard the rumors of a possible reunion between Allen Iverson and your Philadelphia Seventy Sixers. While reactions at the moment appear mixed you should probably read the following statement from team President and General Manager Ed Stefanski, before you get your Under Armour in a Twist.

STATEMENT:

This afternoon, we met with free agent Allen Iverson in Dallas for the first formal discussion regarding a possible return to the Philadelphia 76ers. The meeting lasted approximately two hours and covered a variety of topics, all of which we would prefer to keep between the team and Allen.

The meeting was attended by Allen, his agent Leon Rose and his personal manager Gary Moore, along with 76ers Senior Vice President/Assistant General Manager Tony DiLeo, Head Coach Eddie Jordan, Assistant Coach Aaron McKie and me.

At this time, both parties remain non-committal regarding a final decision and we will continue to discuss internally whether or not to pursue this course.   We want to thank Allen, Leon and Gary for taking the time to meet with us today. The Sixers will have no further comment at this time and further updates will be provided as they become available.

Johnny Gets A Spot

The 37th Annual U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Dinner will take place tomorrow night k in Boston, Massachusetts as U.S. Hockey honors former Flyers forward John LeClair, the 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, Tony Amonte, Tom Barrasso and Frank Zamboni.

LeClair was the first American-born player to record three consecutive 50-goal seasons in the National Hockey League (1995-98) and during his 16 year NHL career, John also helped the Montreal Canadiens capture the 1993 Stanley Cup.

LeClair, who also had stops with the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins registered 406 goals and 413 assists for 819 points in 967 career games and currently ranks 13th on the NHL's all-time points list among American-born players. John arguably had his best years as a member of the Flyers "Legion of Doom" line which included Eric Lindros and Mikael Renberg. In 10 seasons (1994-2004), the St. Albans, Vt., native tallied 333 goals and 643 points as a Flyer, good for seventh on the club's all-time goals and points lists.

LeClair broke the 40-goal mark in five consecutive seasons (1995-2000) and finished in the top 10 in league scoring four times (1994-95, 1996-99).  A two-time Olympian (1998, 2002), LeClair ranked second on the team and third overall in points at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, helping lead Team USA to the silver medal. He was also a member of Team USA at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, and the U.S. National Junior Team at the 1988 and 1989 IIHF World Junior Championships. LeClair netted 34 career points (22-12) in 31 games in a Team USA uniform.

With 107 yards, WR DeSean Jackson picked up his fifth-career 100-yard game Jackson scored on a 48-yard touchdown pass from McNabb, his seventh overall this season (five receiving, one rushing, one punt return) all seven have been 48-plus yards Jackson also had a 53-yard punt return, the fourth longest of his career.

Offensive Quick Hits
The Eagles have scored 31 opening-drive points this season (four TDs, one FG). They are 4-1 when they score on their opening drive. QB Michael Vick had a 34-yard rush on the opening drive, his longest since a 51-yard run as a Falcon on 11/26/06 vs. NO WR Jason Avant scored his second touchdown of the season, tying a career high. Avant also has a career-high 380 receiving yards this season.

The Eagles picked up their first win vs. the Bears since a 19-9 victory at Chicago on 10/3/04. The Eagles won for the first time on NBC’s Sunday Night Football after dropping their first seven such contests.

Vick Gets Early Christmas Present.

A federal appeals court is backing the judge who ruled against the NFL and let quarterback Michael Vick keep more than $16 million in roster bonuses from the Atlanta Falcons. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday affirmed Judge David Doty's order saying Vick had already earned the bonuses before his dog fighting conviction, so the money wasn't subject to forfeiture.

Abdul-Jabbar Battles Cancer

(New York-AP) The NBA’s all –time leading scorer, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is being treated for a rare form of leukemia but his prognosis is encouraging.


Kareem told the Associated press Monday that he was diagnosed last December with chronic myeloid leukemia. An exam showed his white blood cell count was "sky high" and a doctor quickly diagnosed his condition. At first, all Jabbar heard was the word Leukemia. "I was scared," he said. "I thought it was all the same. I thought it could mean I have a month to live." "That was my first question," he said. "Was I going to make it?"

His doctor didn't give any guarantees, but informed him: "You have a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle."

Abdul-Jabbar is taking an oral medication for the disease ironically he is a paid spokesman for the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis, which makes a drug that treats the illness.

Citing the way Los Angeles Lakers teammate Magic Johnson brought awareness to HIV, Abdul-Jabbar said he wants to do the same for his form of blood cancer, which can be fatal if left untreated.

About 5,000 cases of CML are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society said. More than 22,000 people are living in the US with the disease.

Remember, Remember the 5th of November

Growing up as young lad in England one of my favorite days of the year was November 5th, Guy Fawkes day. Who the heck is Guy Fawkes you ask? Well, the historic origins of Guy Fawkes dates back to the conflict between virtually outlawed Catholics and the Protestant establishment of the 16th and early 17th century. On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes and a group of Catholic conspirators were captured in the act of trying to blow up Parliament with barrels of gunpowder while then Protestant King James I was seated in the house. Needless to say, Guy Fawkes life was not spared. That act of treason was the catalyst for the annual tradition of Guy Fawkes Day, a day when young children would build a straw effigy of Fawkes, tote him around in a wheel barrow asking a penny for the Guy. We would then use the collected money to buy fire works to set off later that night at a huge bonfire where we would eventually toss our stuffed effigy. Born from that tradition was aged British adage, Remember, Remember, the 5th of November.

Everything Is Golden

1985 was a good year, especially for sports. It was the year Former Phillie and Cincinnati Red Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb's all time hit record at 4, 191. 1985 also saw one of the biggest upsets in college basketball as the Villanova wildcats upset Patrick Ewing and the mighty Georgetown Hoyas to win the NCAA National Basketball Championship. "85" was also the last time the Temple Owls Football program strung together a four game win streak. It has been a work in progress, but it looks like things are finally starting to pan out for Head Coach Al Golden and the Temple Owls football program. Their recent win 27-13 win over Army has boosted their 2009 record to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in the Mac Conference and while I don’t and to jinx the Owls, they are actually on pace to earn a bowl bid.

Kudos to Owls head coach Al Golden and to the powers that be at Temple for not giving up on the football program. My advice now is to not give up on Golden and try to sign him to a long term deal.

Manuel Control

Charlie Manuel has faith in his players. Phillies fans are too quick to blame Fridays 2-1 NLCS loss on Charlie’s decision to pull Pedro after only 87 pitches, despite the fact Martinez was in a groove. As a matter of fact, Manuel has been second guessed since the 2009 play-offs began. For starters, everyone questioned his decision to start Cliff Lee in game one of the NLDS vs. Colorado, instead of last years World Series MVP Cole Hamels. How did that work out? Lee took a shutout into the ninth and went the distance as the Phillies beat the Rockies 5-1. As a matter of fact in two postseason starts, Lee posting a 1.10 ERA over 16 1/3 innings. Charlie has faith in his players.

Then there was the question of who would be playoff closer. No way could Charlie go with the enigmatic Brad Lidge, who raised the collective blood pressure of Phillies fans everywhere this season when he took the ball in the 9th. Weeeeeeeel, so far, Lidge 3 for 3 in the closer role this post season and has now converted 10 straight save chances in the playoffs while extended his scoreless innings streak in the postseason to 10 2-3. Charlie has faith in his players.

Now, the question prior to Fridays NLCS game 2 was whether or not Pedro should have been the starter and clearly Charlie once again made the right call. Martinez (7 innings, 2 hits, 3 strikeouts 0 runs allowed). So if Pedro was in such a groove, why take him out? Manuel said prior to the game he was looking for Martinez to give him between 75-95 pitches, which he did. Charlie made the switch because he has faith in his players, only this time his players let him down. A bad play by Chan Ho Park on a bunt, another throwing error by the usually solid Chase Utley and a bases loaded walk by J.A. Happ Three miscues that still could have happened with Pedro in the game. Charlie has faith in his players; we should have faith in Charlie.

20/20 Vision

That just didn't look right. After watching Brian Dawkins roam the Eagles secondary for the past decade in his customary midnight green and white number 20 jersey, it was a shock to the system last week to see B-Dawk in a Broncos uniform for the first time. However, despite the wardrobe change, Wolverine still getting it done, laying down the law and making opposing wide receivers think twice about catching that ball across the middle. At thirty-six, Dawkins is currently Denver's second leading tackler, behind linebacker DJ Williams and his leadership has been invaluable. Certainly no surprise to his fans back here in the Delaware Valley. As tough as it was to see him go, you and I both know that when the time comes Dawkins will retire as an Eagle.

Things We Take For Granted

Every day of our lives we take things for granted, some things more than others, but for me, it was a case of gross misconduct. You see, every weekend for the past 30 years it was right there in front of me and I never really gave it much thought, despite the fact it was a big part of who I was and what I did, both as a player and journalist. As a matter of fact it wasn't until recently that I finally figured it out. This year I'm the head coach of my youngest son’s 90 pound Pop Warner football team and one of the requirements of being the head coach is that on a given Wednesday night my staff and I are expected to line our home field and repaint all the end zones, numbers, coaches’ boxes, yard lines and hash marks. WHO KNEW! as a player the grass was always neatly cut and the field freshly painted when we arrived. We just showed up, dressed up and played on it. Well, as I spent several hours guiding the motorized painter around the field that night, I thought back to all the hard working people who used to do this for me and my teammates and gained a whole new respect for them. So with that in mind, thank you to all the grounds crews and care takers for their time and hard work spent prepping those football fields week in and week out during the season.

MTV & BET Lookout

Westbroke

Brian Westbrook was actually a senior in high school the first time he partially tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, but fully tore the ACL after slipping on some ice one night, while walking back to his college dorm at Villanova.

Unfortunately the injury bug followed Brian to the NFL and for whatever reason, Westbrook as had to deal with one nagging injury after another. To date, B-West has yet to play a full 16 game regular season, but to his credit when healthy, is one of the best backs in the game. In Seven NFL Seasons, Brian has amassed almost 10,000 yards from scrimmage and scored 66 touchdowns, oh yeah he also threw a touchdown pass in 2002.

Bottom line, Westbrook has had two operations since the end of the 2008 season; knee surgery following the NFC title game loss to Arizona and more recently, surgery to clean out some loose elements in his ankle. After watching the first two games this season, it’s clear he is still not 100%, certainly not the same player who once had the ability to take it to the house on any given play. Hopefully with rookie Shady McCoy getting some carries this season, Westbrook will be healthy enough to help the team make another play-off run. The fact the team decided not to exercise the $7 million dollar option on Westbrook’s contract tells you all you need to know about Brian's future here in Philadelphia.

Kolb gets his first NFL start.

The kid finally gets his shot. From the moment he was drafted, Eagles third year quarterback Kevin Kolb has dreamt about this day, the day he finally gets the chance to start his first NFL game. Kolb of course getting today's opportunity against the Saints, because of the fractured ribs suffered by Donovan McNabb in last weeks dominating win over Carolina. Based on past performances, most Eagle fans, don't have much confidence in Kolb. I will tell that head coach Andy Reid has a game plan in place that will help, rather than hinder Kolb's success. I like the eagles in this one by a field goal.

Should Vick get a second chance?

Judging by most of the responses left on my face book page, people are not quite ready to forgive Michael Vick for the heinous crimes he committed against some of the pit bulls he once owned. Trust me, when I first heard of what that twisted &%$#@( did to those defenseless dogs, I was the first person who wanted to string Vick up by his kibbles and bits and whip his behind with a wet leather strap. With that said, I also believe that the sentence he recieved, the millions of dollars he lost and the public ridicule and embarrassment he received, were more than enough punishment. No, we cannot bring back the dogs he tortured to death, but many of his dogs were saved, some even now in news homes. Vick should be given a second chance, especially if he shows true remorse for his actions, but more importantly because he has a family of his own to take care off and why should they suffer because of his past transgressions.
