What Can Brown Do For You? Eagles Trade Sheldon To Cleveland

Remember when the eagles had that awesome secondary, the one that consisted of Brian Dawkins, Sheldon Brown, Lito Sheppard and Michael Lewis. Every one of those players a pro-bowler and yet piece by piece the team’s front office has dismantled the hard hitting, ball hawking quartet until they were no more.

Sheldon Brown, the last member of that group was traded to the Cleveland Browns today along with outside linebacker Chris Gocong. In return the birds received linebacker Alex Hall and two draft picks in this month’s three day draft; A fourth round selection, 105 overall and a fifth-round pick, 137 over-all.

Brown, who last off season publically voiced his dissatisfaction with his current contract, has played every game since the Eagles selected him in the second round of the 2002 draft.

Actually, Sheldon claims he hasn’t missed a game since sixth grade. Last season, he played through a hamstring injury in the Eagles’ victory at Chicago. In 2003, Brown played despite suffering from a sports hernia.

Browns departure, now opens the door for a training camp battle at his spot, a battle that more than likely will include Ellis Hobbs, Joselio Hanson and maybe recently signed Marlin Jackson, although Jackson is expected to compete for the starting free safety spot.

After selecting Chris Gocong, in the third round of the 2006 draft out of Cal Poly, the Eagles converted the former Division 1AA defensive end into a linebacker. The conversion process was not a complete bust, but it was not quite what the Birds were looking for.

The Jury meanwhile, is still out on the 6-foot-5, 250 pound Alex Hall, whom Cleveland selected in the seventh round of the 2008 draft. A backup in his first two seasons (he has two career starts); Hall will compete with Moise Fokou at strong-side linebacker.

So the purge of veteran players continues for Philadelphia, as Brown and Gocong now join a list of recently departed Eagles that includes, former All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook, former All-Pro guard Shawn Andrews, linebacker Will Witherspoon, defensive end Darren Howard and wide receiver Kevin Curtis.

Interestingly enough, the most talked about trade rumors surrounding an Eagles veteran this off-season have centered on quarterback Donovan McNabb, who as off today is still an Eagle.

A Change of Climate for United State Women's National Soccer Team

Talk about your transitional play.

Five days ago the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) was on the pitch and under the rays of a typical sun-soaked San Diego afternoon, playing an international friendly against Mexico.

Last night, the same two teams played in a snow-swept Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
That’s right; you heard me. For the first time in its 26-year history, the USWNT played in snow.  Despite the conditions, the results remained the same, as the U.S. women completed the two-game sweep of Mexico 4-0 on aggregate: 1-0 last night, 3-0 on Sunday.

Last night’s lone goal came off the boot of forward Abby Wambach, whose short-range blast in the 60th minute marked her 105th goal in international play. How did Wambach celebrate the milestone? With a snow angel, of course. Brrrrrrrrrr!

Last night also marked the first start for national team veteran Christine Lilly since Oct. 20, 2007. Lilly, who increased her world record cap total to 344, is now playing in her fourth decade of national team play.

The USWNT, now 6-0-0 in 2010, also extended its unbeaten streak in domestic matches to 43 games. The U.S. players will now return to their respective Women’s Pro Soccer (WPS) clubs for the opening of the league’s second season, which kicks off April 10 and 11.

Sometime in mid-May, the USWNT will reassemble to begin preparation for an international friendly against Germany.

Philadelphia Independence: Roster Ready and Raring to Go

The calendar says April 1, but for the eight franchises of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), today is no joking matter, as teams must trim their respective rosters to a league mandated 22 players .18 on the active roster with four players in developmental reserve.

The announcement of the Philadelphia Independence side comes on the eve of the team’s third and final preseason game against defending Big Ten champion Penn State. More on that in a moment.

At first glance, the roster looks nothing like that of an expansion team getting ready for its inaugural season.

For starters, General Manager Terry Foley and head coach Paul Riley have put together a club rich in international team play, boasting nine National Team players from six different countries (US, Sweden, Canada, England, Iceland, and Japan). My only question is who made the scouting trip to Iceland to recruit Holmfridur Magnusdottir (pronounced,Magnus-daughter)?

In addition to putting together an attacking style team consisting of players with great intelligence, moxy, speed, and athleticism, Philadelphia also boasts a roster featuring two of the world’s top ten goalkeepers in Karina “KK” LeBlanc (pronounced LeBlon) and Val Henderson. Henderson and LeBlanc, by the way, were teammates last year with the now defunct Los Angeles Sol.

So as it stands, Philadelphia currently has 18 players under full contract, with four lesser compensated players in developmental reserve.

Basically, if the number of rostered players on the available list falls below 18 due to injury or absence, developmental players can be used during home games or selected for away matches.

A developmental contract is a great opportunity for younger, less experienced players to train at the highest level and earn playing time in WPS. If a developmental player participates in 10 WPS games, they must be moved onto the roster and placed under a regular player contract.

As I mentioned earlier, the Independence will play an exhibition game tonight, 7:30, against the visiting Defending Big Ten Champion, Penn State Nittany Lions. Philadelphia will probably play without the services of forward Amy Rodriguez and midfielder Lori Lindsey, who are coming off last nights 1-0 U.S. Women’s National team win over Mexico in Sandy, Utah.

The Penn State game will be the final dress rehearsal for the expansion Independence before their historic season home opener April 11, against the expansion Atlanta Beat.

In previous exhibition action, Philadelphia posted a 3-0 victory over defending NCAA National Champion North Carolina and 0-0 draw with the Washington Freedom.
